How Much Does a Deer Mount Cost in 2025?

March 1, 2025 · 5 min read

One of the first questions hunters ask when planning a mount is how much it's going to cost. Deer taxidermy pricing is more variable than most people expect — the same style of mount can range from under $400 to over $800 depending on where you live and who does the work.

Shoulder Mount Pricing

The most popular option — the deer shoulder mount — typically costs between $450 and $700 at established, quality taxidermists. In rural areas with lots of competition, you can sometimes find quality work for $350 to $450. In urban markets or from high-demand taxidermists with long wait lists, the same mount might run $750 or more. Price is not always an indicator of quality, but extremely low prices can be a warning sign that the taxidermist is cutting corners on materials or rushing timelines.

European and Skull Mounts

European mounts (skull mounts) are dramatically less expensive than shoulder mounts. Expect to pay between $75 and $200 at most taxidermists. Some offer DIY cleaning kits or maceration services if you want to handle the skull preparation yourself. These are an excellent value option for hunters who want a trophy display without the full investment of a shoulder mount.

What's Included in the Price

Most taxidermist quotes include the form, tanning (or a tanning credit), and all finishing work. Some charge separately for specialty poses, extra-large forms for oversized bucks, or habitat base accessories. Always ask for an itemized quote and make sure you understand what's included before you leave your cape. Get the deposit amount, payment schedule, and expected completion date in writing to avoid surprises later.

Budget at least $500 to $600 for a quality shoulder mount from a reputable taxidermist, and don't be afraid to shop around — talking to two or three taxidermists before committing is always a smart move.
